Brian and I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Santa Elena, Mexico from June 13 through June 22, 2008. Our team consisted of six of members from CUMC and another six people from the Jacksonville area.

Our team served the Tarahumara Indians of the Copper Canyon in the Sierra Madres of Chihuahua. Distant relatives to the Aztecs, the Tarahumara now live a largely forgotten life pushed higher and higher up the mountains. They are a quiet and unassuming people who live by farming and selling their handicrafts to the area’s ecotourists. We continued construction projects at a boarding school that serves several remote villages. We built additional classrooms to be used by adults learning literacy and trade skills. We also brought school supplies, sewing materials, and shoes to share.
